FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Buying a robot or robot cell
  • I have a confidential project, how will it be conducted?
Confidentiality is an important value that we always respect.

Any project that is accepted under such conditions is first of all properly discussed internally so that everyone is aware of the situation. Separate arrangements can also be made to set up the unit in a screened location. Needless to say, any project is always treated confidentially and we will never divulge your information to third parties without your permission.
  • How to assess the feasibility of the project?
We insist on a demonstration / demo at our technical center for every project. We have already built several robotic systems using the latest technologies that can be applied to your product (or part of it) in your presence, using the technology we have available. This allows us to give you a realistic view of the options available and the quality they offer, so that we can confirm the feasibility of your project.

The welded part can also be stored as a reference point for the FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) to evaluate the performance of your robot. This test is performed free of charge for a new project.
  • To be profitable, does my robot need to be welding all the time?
No, this is certainly not always the case. Several of our customers invest that a smaller investment in a solution with fewer options can be just as viable as large units that are permanently operational. This also applies to the question of whether a robot requires multiple workstations or whether one workstation is sufficient.

It's all about profitability and our technical advisor can provide a clear mathematical answer on the subject.
  • What is the average time to get the return on investment (ROI)?
Many aspects must be taken into consideration to properly answer this question. With most of our projects it can be stated that with the increased duty cycle of welding robots compared to manual welders, the average return on investment is 1.5 to 3 years with a single-shift system.

If you work two or three shifts, this period should also change proportionally. As a very basic sample calculation, the annual salary of 2 or 3 manual welders, including all related costs, can be recovered within one year, which does not even take into account the fact that much less (or even no) finishing work would be required.

With the latest arc welding techniques, the quality of welding can increase significantly, which means that you may even decide that weld spatter inspections later on are a thing of the past. The wages you would have paid these people and the reduced costs of the machines equals additional profit for you.
  • Do I benefit from using the welding robot only by producing parts on a large scale?
This question has been asked for many years. Scheduling has become much easier on many fronts (our Easy Scheduling concept is already well known), which means that it can be profitable for you to produce very small batches or just a few parts, depending on certain factors.

If you deal with small recurring production numbers, Panasonic's unique calibration system in combination with the VWPR welding equipment is the ideal solution for you. Virtually all units are equipped with our ATC (Automatic Tool Control) system, which allows the robot to regularly check its own accuracy, independent of the operator controlling it.
  • I am moving my company, so wouldn't it be better for me to postpone the investment in a robot cell?
Not necessarily. Powermig specializes in manufacturing robotic systems that can be easily relocated, while keeping all robot programs intact during the relocation process.

Some of our concepts are fully mobile, which means that you can quickly and easily relocate your unit within your production zone (to optimize your production flow), or even relocate it to a different facility all together. The big advantage is that start-up of a new unit at your facility takes only a day or two, because a welding robot program that has passed the FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) is immediately ready to be deployed in production.
  • Does my choice in determining the welding robot used also have an influence on the welding process?
By choosing a Panasonic welding robot, you can be sure that your welding process will have nothing but benefits. Due to the capabilities of a robot with regard to precision of movement at high speed (which is not always evident to a welder), the limits of the welding process can be changed, so choosing a more economical welding process suddenly becomes feasible.

In more specific terms, this includes manual TIG welding, which can also be done by a robot with SP MAG / HYPER DIPPULS. The welding speed is also 3 to 5 times faster, while introducing significantly less heat.

The welding process also requires less attention, as there are, for example, no electrodes that require maintenance.
  • Who should be involved in the evaluation of my project?
It takes teamwork to successfully implement a robotic system in your company.

We always recommend involving the people who will be directly involved with the implementation of the robotic system and also the people who will be responsible for using it after implementation. We also recommend that you, the customer, visit Powermig to get to know the robotic systems and our structure as your partner and supplier.

By involving more people from your team, the success of the implementation increases exponentially, which generates a great benefit for your investment.
  • How many stakeholders are involved in a project with Powermig?
Only one stakeholder, and that is Powermig itself. This ensures that we remain responsible for the project at all times and can always respond immediately when needed. The same applies to single units and Total Turn Key projects that involve the installation of the robot itself, as well as welding molds and programming. Each unit undergoes a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) where you, the buyer, can see the entire unit at our facility and test it before moving the unit to your own facility.

We also hold a unique position as part of the development team at our main supplier Panasonic, and have used our extensive experience to develop some unique solutions in-house (PPS calibration system, Quick Touch wire search system, Arc Eye laser camera system, the APG programming module, and others).

We can supply the robot unit itself, as well as additional supplies such as soldering wire, which means that we can take full responsibility for an entire project.
  • What guarantee do I have that my robot cell will meet my expectations/specifications?
We have been working to establish the "Powermig" brand for over 15 years now, so we know what it takes to complete a project with a focus on customer satisfaction. We also assemble all robot cells at our premises and test them in general. Before delivery we invite you, our customer, for a design review and approval visit where we can weld your components in the same condition as your robotic system will do after delivery.

Your robotic system is released for delivery only after the project inspection visit has taken place and has been approved by you, our customer. After the robotic system is installed in your company we carry out a further inspection together with you to ensure that all criteria are being met. This gives you peace of mind that your investment is working to its full potential.
  • Is the cycle time analysis the only criterion I should consider when analyzing the purchase of a robotic welding cell?
No, the cost of the welding process is certainly important, but in many cases the following facts are more important than the cycle time: A higher welding quality means that no finishing work is required, which is a big advantage, because the finishing costs are usually higher than the welding cost.

The working conditions of your employees are also significantly improved (welding fumes, radiation and difficult body position), which in turn will have a positive effect on productivity. The availability of welders is a growing problem, as is the skill level of people.

With a welding robot, you can be sure that the knowledge and quality provided by the robot programs will remain within your organization.
  • Can I finance the purchase of my robot cell?
    Yes, it is possible.

There is also the possibility to finance robot cells of different models directly with Powermig. If you are interested in having more information, please contact your contact person at Powermig or our sales team.
Post Sales
  • Can Powermig take back my old robot cell?
Regardless of how old or what condition your old unit is in, it is always worth something. We will discuss the options available with the new proposal. Your old unit will be moved to our robot "graveyard", however.
  • Availability of spare parts and consumables
Securing your production is our priority. In addition, we want to give you the opportunity to benefit from the latest technologies to increase your competitive advantage. This also means offering innovative solutions, so that after a few years we can replace certain types of robots, controls, and other components with new ones. From that point on, our suppliers continue to guarantee the production of new replacement parts for a few more years, should the need arise.

After that, there is still a good chance that parts can be repaired or replaced by used parts. As you can see, ensuring your production is our priority as far as possible. For more information, please contact our service department.
  • Can I certify my robot cell the way I certify my welders?
A welding robot is unfortunately not seen as a person and the skills assigned to a person cannot be assigned to a machine. It is possible, however, to have a robot program certified with the relevant welding parameters so that the robot can also deliver certified work.

A big advantage is that the robot will always implement the program accurately and the risk of human error is excluded. Robots can also monitor/record welding parameters, including non-optional ones, to ensure that this information is available in your quality system for each welded product.
  • Can Powermig provide me with technical support in multiple locations?
Powermig is a fully independent system integrator, able to operate worldwide without any restrictions in the execution of projects, and we also provide people training and after-sales service.

You just need to contact our technicians and we will assist you and, if necessary, travel to your company.
  • Can I use Powermig's laboratory to perform tests after I have already received my robotic system?
We are always open to assist you using the structure of our technical center if there is a specific demand for testing.

For example, if you want to test a new welding process for a product that is already being manufactured, or if you need to develop the welding process for prototypes that will be used in a new project. The appropriate conditions and costs are evaluated individually and agreed upon in advance with the customer.

If your requirements cannot be met by Powermig, we will be happy to refer you to a company in our network that is able to meet your specific needs.
Technical Assistance
  • I have an old robot still being used in production. Is this the most cost-effective way to continue production?
Not always. This should be examined in more detail. Your robot may cost nothing, but the operator costs a little more each year.

With older robots, the output, such as cycle time and weld quality, is often lower than when compared to newer technology. If you project the costs involved with the operation, it may well be that your product is more expensive when you use an older robot. Please feel free to contact us so that we can discuss your situation in detail and provide you with the right advice.
  • Can I have my equipment serviced by my own team?
You can always rely on Powermig's extensive service network, but you can also take responsibility for maintenance yourself. If you prefer, we recommend that you attend a specialized maintenance training course first to ensure that you have all the knowledge you need to do it properly.

You can also order the parts you need directly from us. If you prefer not to do this yourself, you can always rely on our professional service system.
  • I have an old robot cell, can I upgrade it looking for a technological update?
We have converted existing units for various customers (including units that were originally equipped with a different type of robot) to state-of-the-art technology from Panasonic. This includes smaller units as well as large units with multiple robots, force structures, longitudinal travel, and manipulators.
  • What should I prepare before receiving my Powermig robot cell?
Provide the power grid (voltage), long air, gas, check in advance the base where the cell will be fixed, we recommend that the tea is 150 mm.
  • My products have dimensional variations in assembly, does this mean they are not recommended for welding using the robot?
Not at all. Depending on the type of deviation and the base material used, we should be able to find the appropriate sensor to ensure that the robot can inspect the item itself before starting the welding process in order to automatically make the necessary adjustments to its program.
  • What level of knowledge does my programmer need to be able to operate a Powermig robot cell?
Most of our customers' programmers were originally welders, and they showed enthusiasm for mastering the machine.

Knowledge of the welding process is certainly an advantage, although the Weld Navigator also means that a vast amount of welding knowledge is available in the robot as standard. This allows people who do not have extensive welding knowledge to work with a Panasonic robot system.
  • I want to use robotized TIG welding, but want to avoid HF (high frequency) noise inside the plant. Is this possible?
    Yes, it is possible.

Panasonic has developed a unique "lifting arc" function for TIG welding of steel and stainless steel that does not require an initial high-frequency coin. Thanks to the fusion technology (one processor for the robot, power source and manipulators) the reaction time of the report is so fast that there is no adverse effect to the electrode.
  • Can I use my robot in MIG/MAG and TIG welding processes?
Since the introduction of the Panasonic Tawers WG series, it is possible to weld MIG / MAG (SP MAG / Hyper Dippuls) and DC TIG using the same robot unit / power source, as well as TIG with cold wire feed.
  • To do this, only an optional software upgrade is required plus a TIG torch, type VWPR TIG, which is fully compatible
Since the introduction of the Panasonic Tawers WG series, it is possible to weld MIG / MAG (SP MAG / Hyper Dippuls) and DC TIG using the same robot unit / power source, as well as TIG with cold wire feed.

To do this, only an optional software upgrade is required plus a TIG torch, type VWPR TIG, that is fully compatible with the VWPR MIG / MAG torch. TIG welding can also be performed using a cold wire feeder using the same wire feeder as for MIG / MAG welding, since this motor is also controlled as an external motor shaft to ensure a perfect wire feed at high and low speeds.

The VWPR TIG torch is equipped as standard with a cold wire feeder system that can be easily swivelled around the TIG electrode, which greatly improves the range of workpieces that are normally difficult to reach.

The TIG welding process also requires that the TIG electrodes be replaced regularly. To address this, we have designed an automatic TIG electrode change system to significantly improve the productivity of your unit. If you need to switch between MIG / MAG and TIG while working on a single part, we can optionally also offer you our unique torch changing system.
Training
  • Can the trainings be held in my plant?
Yes, but we advise against it. The reason for this is that efficiency is much better at our Training Center than on site.

No matter how good your intentions, your personnel will always be disturbed on their own premises during a training session. Participants in Powermig training sessions also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new unit, department responsible for torch repair, and perhaps most importantly, to make personal contact with our staff who are involved in your project.
ARC-EYE
  • I cannot use the Arc-Eye laser system due to limited access. Are there other solutions available?
Yes. Unless you plan to buy an extension, the robot can push the Arc-Eye system temporarily to the side to be able to weld in hard-to-reach places. Tolerances can also be covered with the Quick Touch system.

Once finished, the robot can pick up the Arc-Eye system again and continue using it. The camera is stored without the need for extra cables on the outside - everything remains compactly integrated in the hose package.
  • Why is the Arc-Eye laser system so much more interesting than other solder joint location systems?
Arc-Eye is a high-tech solution designed specifically for arc welding.

Our Arc-Eye system features a unique type of laser in combination with a special optical design that allows us to obtain a 3D image with an engraving. In addition, this system is not sensitive to reflections on aluminum and stainless steel for example. This ensures that the system "sees" the welding seam exactly as it is.

The Arc-Eye laser sensor is also seamlessly integrated into the controller of the Panasonic welding robot. While conventional sensor systems only transmit data to the robot controller, the Arc-Eye and Panasonic work perfectly together.

If the product is not perfectly presented to the robot (for example, with welding spots), the system intelligence as well as the 3D information and the robot motion will be optimally aligned to obtain the appropriate torch position. This integration is unique and is not possible with conventional systems.
Programming
  • If in the future I decide to replace my robot with a new version, will I need to reprogram everything?
No, not necessarily. Panasonic's unique calibrated robots allow you to transfer existing programs to your new robot via the offline programming system DTPS. Down conversion is also possible, subject to a few conditions.
  • How difficult is it to program a Powermig robotic welding cell?
    No, not at all.

The Panasonic welding robot was designed specifically for arc welding, with the intention that anyone should be able to program the robot.

Most of our customers' programmers are also originally welders, but the standard robot also comes with a WELD NAVIGATION function to help people who are less familiar with welding. With this function, the robot suggests suitable welding parameters. The programming unit is based on Windows CE, is very well organized and everything is shown clearly by means of uniform icons.

If a customer opts for the DTPS line programming system, there are a few other options available where robot programs can be designed automatically, without the intervention of a programmer, to provide you with the best available solution.

No matter which option you should decide on, Powermig can provide a complete training package to ensure that you can enjoy optimal results from your investment.
